UK Teen Jailed After Bringing £600,000 Cannabis Shipment From Bangkok
LONDON, Sept. 8, 2026 — A 19-year-old man from Southampton has been jailed for three years and eight months after being caught at Heathrow Airport with more than 20kg of cannabis worth up to £600,000 following a trip from Bangkok, the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) said.
Noah Barker, of Derby Road, Southampton, was sentenced at Southampton Crown Court on September 4 for cannabis smuggling and violent disorder. He had arrived at Heathrow from Bangkok on July 10 when Border Force officers searched two suitcases he was carrying.
The luggage contained 41 packages of cannabis weighing just over 20kg, with an estimated street value of up to £600,000. When officers asked Barker what was inside the suitcases, he reportedly replied: “It is cannabis.”
According to the NCA, Barker told investigators that he had been recruited by a criminal group through Snapchat, which offered him a free holiday in Thailand and payment to bring an item back to the UK. He said he knew the suitcases contained either cannabis or cocaine but never received the promised payment.
Barker, who is unemployed and told investigators that he smokes cannabis, pleaded guilty to the smuggling offence and received 16 months in prison for it. A further two years and four months of his sentence relates to a violent disorder offence connected to an investigation into disorder following protests in Southampton on June 2.
NCA senior investigating officer Mark Abbott said the case highlighted the risks of becoming involved in drug courier schemes, warning that criminal convictions can have long-term consequences for people’s careers and ability to travel.
The NCA said it is working with Border Force and Thai authorities to tackle cannabis smuggling into the UK and has launched efforts aimed at warning potential couriers who are approached through social media.
The agency said the number of people caught bringing cannabis into the UK by air increased from 142 in 2023 to 801 in 2024 and 976 in 2025, while around 600 suspected couriers were arrested at UK airports during the first six months of 2026.
The case serves as a warning to travellers in Thailand against accepting luggage, transportation arrangements or apparently free trips from people met online, particularly when asked to carry items across international borders.
