Five Jailed After £13.8 Million Cannabis Shipment From Thailand Seized at UK Airport Five Jailed After £13.8 Million Cannabis Shipment From Thailand Seized at UK Airport

BIRMINGHAM, October 25, 2026 — Five members of a drug-smuggling conspiracy have been sentenced to prison after Border Force officers discovered 460 kilograms of cannabis hidden in 22 suitcases arriving at Birmingham Airport from Thailand via Paris in August 2024.

The UK National Crime Agency (NCA) estimated the cannabis had a street value of £13.8 million. Investigators said members of the group had paid excess baggage charges at Bangkok airport because their suitcases were unusually heavy.

Eleven alleged couriers were arrested at Birmingham Airport on August 9, 2024, after officers identified links between passengers arriving on connecting flights. Border Force subsequently deployed additional officers to the airport’s “nothing to declare” green channel, where the cannabis was discovered.

Cannabis Hidden Beneath Clothing in 22 Suitcases

Investigators found approximately 20 kilograms of vacuum-packed cannabis in each of the couriers’ two large suitcases. The drugs were concealed beneath a thin layer of clothing.

Eight of the suitcases also contained Apple AirTags. Investigators established that the tracking devices were linked to the same Apple ID account.

All 11 individuals were charged in connection with an alleged conspiracy involving the attempted importation and handling of Class B drugs, with the intention of evading the UK’s import prohibition.

Five Couriers Jailed at Birmingham Crown Court

At Birmingham Crown Court on October 23, 2026, five defendants received prison sentences:

  1. Jaden Ramen, 23, from Colliers Wood, south London, was jailed for 32 months.
  2. Paige Crisp, 25, from Malvern, Worcestershire, received 30 months.
  3. Gideon Oluwasetemi Olumoyegun, 26, from Dagenham, and Ryan Boachie, 32, from Edmonton, north London, each received 24 months.
  4. Claire McCullough, 36, from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, received 24 months, plus a consecutive two-month sentence for assaulting a shop worker.

The NCA said Crisp, Ramen and Tasia Nelson, 22, from Newquay, Cornwall, were convicted on August 19 following a four-week trial. McCullough, Boachie, Olumoyegun and Jamal Clarke, 22, from Walthamstow, London, had pleaded guilty at earlier hearings.

Nelson and Clarke are scheduled to be sentenced on October 30, the agency said.

Four other couriers linked to the same conspiracy were sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on September 21.

More Members Convicted in Related Proceedings

The NCA also reported convictions involving four additional defendants. Carsten Kyei, 21, from Plaistow, London, and Nathan Vitorino, 26, from Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, were found guilty following a three-week trial on May 26.

Bradley Lloyd, 27, from Wythenshawe, and Lewis Ross, 35, from Bolton, changed their pleas to guilty during the same trial.

NCA Warns Drug Couriers of Serious Consequences

Paul Boniface, an NCA senior investigating officer, said the convictions should serve as a warning to anyone considering becoming involved in drug smuggling.

He said the couriers faced prison sentences and life-changing criminal convictions that could seriously affect their future career and travel opportunities. Boniface also thanked Border Force officers for their work in detecting the shipment.

The case highlights the legal risks facing travellers who carry illegal drugs across international borders. Although cannabis laws differ between countries, travellers remain subject to the importation laws of their destination. In the United Kingdom, cannabis is classified as a Class B drug.
