Cambodia’s Humanitarian Response Wins Praise From International Cruise Passengers
PHNOM PENH, October 31, 2026 — Approximately 200 international tourists from 15 nationalities aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship have expressed gratitude to the Cambodian government for its warm hospitality, assistance and support after the vessel encountered difficulties obtaining fuel to continue its journey.
The cruise ship, carrying around 200 passengers alongside approximately 150 crew members and staff, is currently docked at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port in Preah Sihanouk province.
In a statement dated October 29, 2026, Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism said the government had coordinated assistance to ensure the safety, well-being and comfort of passengers and crew during their stay in the country.
Cambodian Authorities Coordinate Assistance
Acting under the guidance of Prime Minister Hun Manet, senior government officials, including Preah Sihanouk Provincial Deputy Governor Samut Sotharith and Sihanoukville Autonomous Port Director-General Lou Kim Chhun, visited the vessel to assess the situation and meet directly with passengers and crew.
Representatives from the General Department of Immigration, provincial tourism department and other relevant agencies also participated in the response.
The officials listened to passengers’ concerns and requests and worked with relevant authorities to identify appropriate solutions to their immediate needs.
Following consultations and an assessment of the situation, the Ministry of Tourism, Preah Sihanouk provincial administration and other government institutions established coordination teams and introduced timely measures to facilitate access to information and essential services.
The response prioritised passenger safety, health, well-being and comfort throughout their stay.

The ministry also acknowledged the cooperation of Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, First Vice-Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia and Chairman of the National Logistics Council, and Information Minister Neth Pheaktra, alongside other relevant agencies.
International Visitors Praise Cambodia’s Hospitality
According to the ministry, passengers, crew members and other staff expressed appreciation and confidence in the Cambodian government’s response, praising the country’s humanitarian spirit, friendly people and warm hospitality.
Some passengers also took the opportunity to explore coastal destinations, islands and tourist attractions around Preah Sihanouk province, while others travelled to Phnom Penh during their stay.
Several visitors reportedly expressed interest in returning to Cambodia for future holidays after experiencing the country’s natural beauty and tourism attractions.
The ministry emphasised that international visitors are regarded not simply as tourists but as friends who deserve respect, care and hospitality, particularly when facing unexpected difficulties.
Cambodia Recalls Humanitarian Response to Westerdam in 2020
The assistance provided to Villa Vie Odyssey also recalls Cambodia’s international humanitarian response to the cruise ship Westerdam in February 2020, during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the time, under the leadership of former Prime Minister Hun Sen, Cambodia allowed the Westerdam to dock at Sihanoukville after the vessel encountered difficulties finding a port willing to receive it amid concerns about the coronavirus outbreak.
The decision received international recognition and helped popularise the phrase “A Small Country with a Big Heart,” reflecting Cambodia’s message of solidarity and humanitarian compassion.
The Ministry of Tourism said the latest response further demonstrates Cambodia’s commitment to presenting itself as a safe, welcoming and friendly tourism destination under the national tourism slogan, “Cambodia: Kingdom of Wonder, Feel the Warmth.”
