LONDON, March 4, 2026 — Britain will suspend study visas for nationals of Afghanistan, Myanmar, Cameroon and Sudan in a move aimed at curbing rising asylum claims linked to student routes, the Home Office said on Wednesday.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the government was activating an “emergency brake” mechanism after a sharp increase in asylum applications from the four countries. Work visas for Afghan nationals will also be halted.

The decision marks the first time the UK has suspended visa categories for specific nationalities under new migration control powers.

Immigration remains a politically sensitive issue in Britain, with the government pledging tighter oversight of legal routes it says have been misused. The new restrictions are expected to take effect later this month.
