BANTEAY MEANCHEY, March 19, 2026 — A deadly explosion from a cluster munition believed to be left behind from past Thai military activity has killed one Cambodian civilian and seriously injured another, underscoring the lasting human cost of war remnants along the border.

The blast occurred in Boeng Snao village, Sla Kram commune, Svay Chek district, claiming the life of a 42-year-old man and critically injuring a 47-year-old, according to local authorities.

Evidence collected from the scene identified the device as an M46 submunition from a 155mm NR269 artillery projectile, reinforcing concerns over unexploded ordnance linked to past cross-border conflict.

The incident highlights the continued dangers faced by Cambodian communities, where remnants of war still threaten lives, livelihoods and long-term development decades after active fighting has ceased.

Authorities called for heightened vigilance among residents and urged the public to avoid any suspicious objects, warning that such devices remain highly dangerous. Citizens are advised to report any findings to the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) and local authorities for safe disposal.

Officials and observers say the tragedy is a stark reminder of the enduring consequences of past military actions, calling for greater accountability and renewed commitment to clearing explosive remnants of war to ensure lasting peace and security for affected communities.
