Japan Expands Support for Cambodia’s Water Supply System
PHNOM PENH, March 20, 2026 — Cambodia and Japan have signed an agreement to increase Japanese grant assistance for a key water supply project, underscoring deepening bilateral cooperation and support for Cambodia’s development.
The agreement was signed by Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Japan’s Ambassador to Cambodia Ueno Atsushi.
Under the new exchange of notes, Japan will raise its grant funding for the expansion of the water supply system in Ta Khmau from 3.421 billion yen (about $22 million) to 3.568 billion yen (around $23 million).
Officials said the additional funding will help improve access to clean water, strengthen urban infrastructure and support Cambodia’s socio-economic development.
The project forms part of broader cooperation under the Cambodia–Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting Tokyo’s continued commitment to supporting Cambodia’s long-term growth.
Analysts say Japan remains one of Cambodia’s key development partners, particularly in infrastructure, water management and human resource development.
