China Warns of Scam, Trafficking Risks Near Thailand-Myanmar Border
BANGKOK, June 24, 2026 – China’s embassy in Thailand has advised Chinese citizens to exercise heightened caution or avoid travelling to Thailand’s Tak province along the Myanmar border, citing the risks of online scam operations, human trafficking and other cross-border crimes.
In a travel advisory issued on Wednesday, the embassy warned that Mae Sot district and other border areas adjacent to Myanmar have become high-risk locations for illegal activities, including online scam operations, illegal employment, online gambling, migrant smuggling, human trafficking and other forms of transnational crime.
The embassy said the warning was based on the security situation in the area, where criminal syndicates have operated in recent years.
It urged Chinese nationals to plan their travel carefully, avoid visiting high-risk border areas where possible and remain wary of advertisements offering high-paying jobs, investment opportunities or gambling-related activities that could be linked to criminal networks.
The embassy also advised travellers who intend to visit the area to consult local authorities in advance and conduct a thorough assessment of the potential security risks before travelling.
The advisory comes as authorities in Thailand, China and neighbouring countries continue to cooperate in efforts to dismantle online scam compounds and human trafficking networks operating along the Thailand-Myanmar border.
