Russian Embassy in Cambodia Denies Fake Claims Attributed to Putin Over Cambodia Relations

PHNOM PENH, 28 August 2026 — The Russian Embassy in Cambodia has rejected as “complete fake” social media claims alleging that Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed unwillingness to support Cambodia and described the Kingdom as “ungrateful.”

In a statement issued on Friday, the embassy said it had taken note of a post published by the Tin New 24h Facebook page, which was subsequently circulated by other social media groups, including ASEAN Skylines Rising.

The Russian Embassy categorically denied the claims, stating that Putin had never made such statements and that the allegations contradict the spirit of relations between Russia and Cambodia.

The embassy highlighted Russia’s historical support for Cambodia’s reconstruction following the country’s liberation from the Khmer Rouge regime and said bilateral cooperation continues to develop.

It also referred to a conversation between Putin and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the ASEAN–Russia Summit in Kazan, saying the Russian president had reaffirmed Russia’s continued assistance to Cambodia in professional training and expressed interest in expanding business-to-business contacts.

According to the embassy, Putin also emphasized efforts by the two governments to strengthen trade and investment ties.

The embassy further pointed to recent diplomatic engagement between the two countries, including consultations held on 24 August 2026 between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko and Cambodian Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Meas Kim Heng.

Concluding its statement, the Russian Embassy urged the public and social media users to verify information through reliable sources.
