BANGKOK, October 17, 2026 — Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul played the saxophone for an audience of international financial leaders and approximately 3,000 guests on October 16, as hundreds of demonstrators took to Bangkok’s streets to protest the policies of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

Anutin’s performance took place during a Thai government reception at One Bangkok Forum, held alongside the 2026 IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings. The event brought together senior officials, international delegates and business representatives, including IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga.

Music and Diplomacy Amid Public Protests

The prime minister took to the stage after delivering remarks promoting Thai food, culture and hospitality as sources of economic opportunity and ways to strengthen relationships with international partners.

Anutin welcomed delegates to Thailand, which last hosted the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings in 1991. He said international cooperation remained essential to building a better future and encouraged guests to enjoy Thai cuisine, music and hospitality beyond the conference rooms.

His saxophone performance drew applause and cheers from the reception audience.

Outside the diplomatic gathering, hundreds of protesters demonstrated against the IMF and World Bank on the same day, calling for changes to policies they said contributed to inequality and hardship. Demonstrators urged the institutions to prioritise climate financing and tax reforms that benefit poorer communities rather than press governments to cut subsidies and social spending.

Anutin Promotes Thailand’s Cultural Economy

During his address, Anutin highlighted Thai cuisine as a source of livelihoods for farmers, street vendors, chefs and restaurant owners. He also pointed to traditional healthcare, wellness and hospitality as areas with potential to create new economic opportunities.

The prime minister credited younger generations with bringing fresh ideas to Thai cuisine, design, art and other creative industries. He said Thailand aimed to combine its cultural heritage with innovation and new technology to reach international audiences.

Anutin concluded by expressing hope that the annual meetings would deliver meaningful results and leave participants with positive memories of Thailand. He also encouraged international partners to maintain the friendships and cooperation developed during their visit.

The contrasting scenes of a celebratory government reception and street demonstrations highlighted differing perspectives on the role of international financial institutions, with officials promoting cooperation and economic opportunities while protesters called for policies that better address inequality and the needs of vulnerable communities.
