Applying Thai Law on Cambodian Territory: A Violation of Sovereignty
Thailand’s recent attempts to enforce its domestic law on Cambodian territory are not minor border disputes—they are a direct assault on Cambodia’s sovereignty and a threat to regional stability. Just weeks after a peace initiative brokered by US President Donald Trump, with careful coordination by Malaysia, both nations committed to a ceasefire along the border, agreeing to halt provocations, troop movements, and unilateral actions.
Yet Thailand continues to encroach on Cambodian villages and impose its legal authority beyond recognized borders, undermining not only Cambodia’s territorial integrity but also the very principles of international law.
Sovereignty is not a negotiable privilege—it is the bedrock of the international system. Cambodia has never sought to enforce its laws on Thai soil, and it demands the same respect in return. Thailand’s unilateral imposition of its domestic law on Cambodian territory amounts to aggression disguised as administration.
Local civilians face disruption, intimidation, and fear, while the fragile trust needed for lasting peace erodes with each violation.
By asserting control over Cambodian land, Thailand is sending a dangerous signal: that international agreements, borders, and the rights of neighboring nations can be ignored at will—a precedent that jeopardizes peace across Southeast Asia.
The ceasefire brokered under the guidance of President Trump and coordinated by Malaysia represented a critical step toward stability. It was founded on dialogue, mutual respect, and the recognition of Cambodia’s sovereignty. Thailand’s repeated violations not only breach these agreements but also threaten the credibility of international mediation. Ignoring such actions risks a return to open conflict, eroding faith in diplomatic solutions designed to prevent escalation and protect civilians.
The international community, including ASEAN and the United Nations, must act decisively. Applying Thai law on Cambodian soil is illegal under international law and a violation of human dignity. Cambodia calls on all responsible actors to condemn these actions and insist that Thailand respect the ceasefire, honor Cambodia’s sovereignty, and adhere to international norms. Peace is possible, but it cannot coexist with aggression.
Cambodia remains committed to dialogue and lasting resolution, but it will defend its territory and people. The message is unmistakable: respect Cambodia’s borders, respect Cambodia’s sovereignty, and uphold the principles of international law.
Anything less is an endorsement of aggression, a threat to regional stability, and a betrayal of the very process designed to secure peace.
