Australia Welcomes Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire, Urges Durable Peace and Humanitarian Protection
Canberra, 27 December 2025 — The Australian Government has welcomed the Joint Statement of the Third Cambodia–Thailand Special General Border Committee meeting held on 27 December, commending the agreement on an immediate ceasefire and a series of confidence-building measures aimed at restoring peace and stability along the Cambodia–Thailand border.
In its statement, Australia expressed support for the commitments undertaken by both sides to protect civilians, resume peaceful border demarcation and demining efforts, abide by international law, and release detained soldiers, in accordance with the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration facilitated by the United States and ASEAN.
Australia also acknowledged and thanked the ASEAN Observer Teams for their critical and ongoing role in supporting verification and implementation of the agreed measures, emphasizing the importance of transparency and regional cooperation in sustaining the ceasefire.
Canberra further urged Cambodia and Thailand to take additional steps toward achieving a fair and durable peace, while calling for sustained efforts to alleviate the humanitarian impact of the conflict, particularly for affected civilian communities along the border.
The statement underscores Australia’s continued support for peaceful dialogue, respect for international law, and ASEAN-led mechanisms as the foundation for long-term stability and security in Southeast Asia.
