Bangkok Demands Iran Apologize Over Attack on Thai Cargo Ship
BANGKOK, March 12, 2026 — Thailand has demanded a formal apology from Iran after a Thai-flagged cargo ship was damaged in an attack in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing crew members to abandon the ship, officials said.
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry said the incident occurred on Wednesday, when the cargo ship Mayuree Naree, operated by Thai company Precious Shipping, was struck by two projectiles, causing a fire and severe damage to the engine room.
Of the 23 crew members on board, 20 were evacuated safely to Oman, while three remain missing and are believed to have been trapped in the engine room during the attack.
According to Iranian media statements cited by officials, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) acknowledged that the vessel had been targeted by Iranian fighter aircraft.
The IRGC has previously warned that ships transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route, could be considered potential targets amid rising regional tensions.
Thai authorities said they are seeking clarification and accountability over the incident.
