Bangladesh Moves to Stabilize Fuel Supply With Iran Hormuz Deal
DHAKA, March 12, 2026 — Iran has agreed to grant safe passage for Bangladeshi oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz, Bangladeshi officials said, as Dhaka seeks to stabilize fuel supplies amid regional tensions.
Under the arrangement, Bangladeshi ships must notify Iranian authorities before entering the strategic waterway to ensure secure transit.
The move comes as Bangladesh steps up efforts to maintain steady fuel supplies for domestic demand.
Officials said a shipment of 27,000 tonnes of diesel recently arrived at Chattogram port, with four additional vessels expected in the coming weeks.
To meet demand in April, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources is also procuring around 300,000 tonnes of diesel from alternative sources, officials said.
The measures are aimed at mitigating supply disruptions and shipping risks linked to instability in the Middle East and uncertainties surrounding maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor.
