Koh Kong, 11 January, 2026 — Four Cambodian fishermen who were detained by Thai naval forces on January 6 have safely returned home, according to an official statement posted today on the Facebook page of the Governor of Koh Kong Province.

The announcement was made on the afternoon of January 11 by Her Excellency Chi Va, Governor of Koh Kong, who confirmed the return of all four fishermen. “We warmly welcome the four fishermen who have now returned to their homes. This is the result of calm but resolute efforts,” the Governor stated, underscoring a firm yet measured approach to safeguarding the welfare of Cambodian citizens.

The development follows an incident on January 6, when Thai naval units intercepted and seized a Cambodian fishing vessel operating lawfully within Cambodia’s maritime territory off the coast of Koh Kong Province. The four fishermen were taken into Thai custody, raising serious concerns regarding Cambodia’s maritime sovereignty and the safety of its nationals.

The safe return of the fishermen marks a positive outcome amid heightened sensitivities along the Cambodia–Thailand maritime boundary. Cambodian authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting citizens’ rights through appropriate diplomatic channels and border coordination mechanisms, while continuing to uphold peace, restraint, and adherence to international law.

Officials emphasized that Cambodia remains steadfast in defending its sovereignty and maritime rights, and will continue to address such incidents through dialogue and established bilateral frameworks to ensure long-term stability and mutual respect.
