BREAKING: UNESCO Closely Monitoring Damage to Cambodian Heritage Sites Following Destructive Thai Military Attacks
Phnom Penh, 12 December 2025 — The UNESCO World Heritage Centre has confirmed that it is closely examining and monitoring the serious damage inflicted upon several ancient Cambodian temples as a result of destructive shelling carried out by Thai military forces amid ongoing armed clashes along the border.
Lazare Eloundou Assomo, Director of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, stated via video address from France to the 32nd Plenary Session of the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of the Historic Sites of Angkor and Sambor Prei Kuk (ICC–Angkor/Sambor Prei Kuk) on the morning of 12 December 2025, that Cambodia is a nation endowed with exceptionally rich cultural heritage.
