Brunei Expands Visa-Free Access to 90 Countries in Tourism Push
BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, April 9, 2026 — Brunei has introduced visa-free entry for citizens of more than 90 countries, in a move aimed at boosting tourism and strengthening its economic diversification efforts, officials said.
The new policy covers a wide range of countries, including Indonesia, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Denmark, Austria and New Zealand, according to the Brunei Tourism Development Department.
Authorities expect the measure to drive a 20% increase in international arrivals in 2025, as the Southeast Asian nation seeks to attract more visitors through relaxed entry rules, improved infrastructure and expanded global marketing.
Brunei recorded approximately 250,000 international visitors in 2024, with projections rising to around 300,000 in 2025. Tourism’s contribution to gross domestic product is also forecast to grow by 15%, reflecting the sector’s increasing role in the economy.
The initiative comes as Brunei steps up efforts to compete with regional tourism hubs such as Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, which have long benefited from liberal visa policies.
Officials said the country will focus on promoting eco-tourism and luxury travel, leveraging its relatively untouched natural environment, cultural heritage and high-end hospitality offerings.
The visa-free expansion is part of a broader strategy to position Brunei as a more accessible and attractive destination in Southeast Asia.
