Phnom Penh, Feb. 11, 2026 — Cambodia’s mine authority on Wednesday rejected suggestions it had laid new anti-personnel landmines along the Thai border, saying a device reportedly discovered this week was likely a remnant from past conflicts.

The Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) said it had taken note of Thai military reports regarding the discovery of an anti-personnel mine in a border area on Feb. 11.

Based on its national database and technical experience in clearing contaminated land along the frontier, CMAA assessed that any such device was “highly likely” to be a legacy mine remaining from decades of conflict in the region.

Cambodia does not produce, stockpile or lay new anti-personnel mines and maintains strict national controls in line with its international humanitarian disarmament obligations, the authority said.

It warned that unverified information could cause misunderstandings and heighten tensions.

CMAA said Cambodia remains committed to engaging through bilateral and international mechanisms to clarify the technical facts and ensure that mine action efforts continue to protect civilians and promote stability along the border.
