PHNOM PENH, Feb 26, 2026 — Cambodia on Thursday denied laying any new anti-personnel mines along its border and called for joint technical verification following reports of newly discovered explosives in frontier areas.

In a statement, the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) reaffirmed the country’s full commitment to the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines, saying it has not deployed new mines and remains consistent and transparent in its obligations.

The authority said border areas between the two countries remain contaminated by legacy mines and unexploded ordnance from decades of conflict, with remnants continuing to be discovered on both sides.

It added that any unilateral investigation or public presentation of findings by Thai authorities could not be considered definitive, urging instead a jointly agreed mechanism for technical assessment conducted in a transparent and cooperative manner.

Cambodia said it stands ready to work constructively to clarify any concerns, stressing that mine action should not be politicized and must prioritize civilian safety and humanitarian risk reduction.

The statement reaffirmed Phnom Penh’s commitment to dialogue, cooperation and continued joint efforts toward a safe and clearly demarcated border.
