PHNOM PENH, June 3, 2026 — Cambodia and India have officially launched the first phase of a cross-border QR code payment connectivity system, allowing Indian visitors to make digital payments at merchants across Cambodia by scanning KHQR codes using mobile banking applications from participating Indian financial institutions.

The launch ceremony was held in Phnom Penh under the co-chairmanship of Chea Serey, Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, and Vanlalvawna Bawitlung, India’s Ambassador to Cambodia.

The event was also attended by Saswat Kumar Mahapatra, General Manager of the Reserve Bank of India, along with representatives from Cambodia’s tourism sector, financial institutions, industry associations and business communities.

Under the first phase of the initiative, Indian travelers visiting Cambodia can use their domestic mobile banking applications to scan KHQR codes and pay for goods and services at approximately 4.5 million merchant locations nationwide.

The National Bank of Cambodia said the new payment link is expected to improve convenience, speed and security for Indian visitors while supporting growing tourism and economic exchanges between the two countries.

Officials described the launch as an important milestone in strengthening digital financial connectivity and promoting seamless cross-border retail payments.

The initiative comes as Cambodia continues to expand its regional digital payment network through the KHQR system, which has become a key component of the country’s digital financial infrastructure.

Authorities from both countries are expected to continue cooperation on future phases of the project, potentially expanding payment interoperability in both directions.
