Cambodia Launches Second Phase of Emergency Support Project to Protect Preah Vihear Temple
PREAH VIHEAR, October 21, 2026 — Cambodia has launched the second phase of an emergency structural support project at Preah Vihear Temple, targeting 29 locations to prevent collapses, minimise structural damage and safeguard the historic sanctuary.
The Department of Conservation and Archaeology of the Preah Vihear National Authority commenced the project on October 19, 2026, following a traditional blessing ceremony.
The second phase covers 29 locations across the temple complex, including its five gopuras, or monumental gateways, connecting causeways and the western platform supporting the Naga balustrade near the first level of the ancient northern staircase.
#29 Locations Targeted for Emergency Support
The planned interventions are distributed across the temple complex as follows:
– Gopura I: 10 locations
– Gopura II: 8 locations
– Causeway between Gopuras II and III: 2 locations
– Gopura III: 5 locations
– Gopura IV: 1 location
– Causeway between Gopuras IV and V: 1 location
– Gopura V: 1 location
– Western platform supporting the Naga balustrade: 1 location
The second phase builds on the first phase, during which emergency structural support interventions were carried out at 23 locations spanning Gopuras I through V.
#Preserving Cambodia’s Historic Heritage
According to the project announcement, the emergency support measures aim to prevent structural collapses and further deterioration of the temple’s buildings.
The work is also intended to protect the site’s historical heritage value and ensure that Preah Vihear Temple remains structurally stable and safe ahead of future restoration work.
The project represents a continued effort by the Preah Vihear National Authority to safeguard one of Cambodia’s important historic monuments through preventive conservation and emergency structural intervention.
