Cambodia Marks 70 Years of Membership in the United Nations, Reaffirms Commitment to Global Peace
Phnom Penh, 14 December 2025 — Today the Kingdom of Cambodia commemorates the 70th anniversary of its membership in the United Nations (UN), marking seven decades since Cambodia formally joined the world’s largest international organization on 14 December 1955.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of the Kingdom of Cambodia, reflected on the historical significance of the United Nations, which was established on 24 October 1945 in the aftermath of the Second World War, with the core mission of maintaining international peace and security, promoting cooperation among nations under international law, advancing economic development, resolving disputes between member states, and preventing the outbreak of another global war.
Samdech Techo emphasized that Cambodia has been an active and responsible member of the United Nations, making meaningful contributions to global peace, stability, and security. Over the past more than ten years, Cambodia has deployed a significant number of UN peacekeeping forces to international missions, including both male and female personnel, in countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Lebanon, the Central African Republic, Syria, Cyprus, and Mali, among others.
Cambodia’s UN peacekeeping contingents have included highly specialized units in engineering, Level-2 medical services, mine clearance, military police, and explosive ordnance disposal, demonstrating the country’s professionalism and technical expertise in complex and high-risk environments.
Notably, Samdech Techo highlighted that Cambodia has recently emerged as one of the leading countries in promoting the participation of women in UN peacekeeping missions, providing expanded opportunities for female peacekeepers to serve internationally under the United Nations framework.
The statement reaffirms Cambodia’s steadfast commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, multilateralism, and the pursuit of peace through international cooperation, underscoring the Kingdom’s continued dedication to contributing responsibly to global peace and security.
