Cambodia Promotes Solar, Hydropower to Strengthen Energy Security
PURSAT, March 9, 2026 — Cambodia is accelerating efforts to expand clean energy use and promote energy conservation in order to reduce reliance on imported oil and ease the burden on transport workers, Energy Minister Keo Rottanak said on Sunday.
Speaking during a meeting with motorbike taxi, ride-hailing and tuk-tuk drivers in Pursat province, the minister said the government is closely monitoring global developments, particularly tensions in the Middle East that have pushed oil and commodity prices higher worldwide.
Despite global volatility, Cambodia has managed to maintain economic stability and development, he said.
The government is promoting greater use of renewable energy sources such as hydropower and solar power, along with energy-saving measures, to gradually reduce dependence on imported fuel.
Keo Rottanak also reassured the public that Cambodia has sufficient electricity supply from diverse sources, helping ensure stability for households and businesses.
The minister said government policies also aim to support workers in the informal economy, including drivers in the transport sector, by maintaining stable economic conditions and expanding domestic production and services.
He added that the government is exploring plans to develop small and medium enterprise zones to boost local manufacturing and supply chains, which could create more jobs and increase demand for transport services.
