Cambodia protests Thai military action over Buddha statue installation in Preah Vihear
PHNOM PENH, Jan 22, 2026 — Cambodia has formally protested against the Thai military over the installation of a Buddha statue in a disputed border area, saying the move violates Cambodia’s sovereignty and breaches international law, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Cult and Religion on Thursday.
The ministry said Thai forces installed the statue in An Ses village, Preah Vihear province, at a site where a statue of Lord Vishnu had previously been destroyed by Thai military personnel. Cambodia described the act as an unlawful use of force to alter territorial status, contrary to fundamental principles of international law that prohibit the acquisition of territory through coercion.
The statement said the action contradicts Thailand’s commitments under existing ceasefire and de-escalation agreements, including the July 28, 2025 ceasefire, General Border Committee meeting records, and joint declarations adopted in October and December 2025. These agreements obligate both sides to refrain from unilateral measures and to resolve disputes peacefully.
Cambodia called on Thailand to fully respect international law, existing treaties and agreements, and to adhere in good faith to the spirit of bilateral commitments aimed at maintaining peace and stability along the border.
