PHNOM PENH, April 9, 2026 — Cambodia has briefed diplomats and international organizations on a newly enacted law aimed at combating online scams, as authorities intensify efforts to tackle transnational cybercrime.

The briefing, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, followed the law’s entry into force on April 7 and was attended by members of the diplomatic corps and international partners.

Senior Minister Chhay Sinarith, who heads the Secretariat of the Commission for Combating Online Scams, said the legislation introduces stricter penalties and provides a comprehensive legal framework to support law enforcement agencies.

He highlighted the growing sophistication of online scams, noting that criminal networks increasingly rely on technologies such as artificial intelligence, encrypted platforms and cross-border financial systems.

The government said the new law would be enforced firmly and transparently, while ensuring legal protections for victims, cooperating individuals and legitimate businesses.

Authorities also stressed the importance of international cooperation, calling for continued support in areas such as technical assistance, intelligence sharing and coordinated repatriation efforts.

Cambodia has launched a nationwide crackdown on scam operations in recent years, as officials seek to address risks to public security and restore the country’s international reputation.

Officials expressed confidence that, with sustained global cooperation, online scam activities could be significantly reduced or eliminated.
