Cambodia Showcases Evolution of Royal Ballet Costumes as Cultural Legacy

PHNOM PENH, March 19, 2026 — Cambodia’s senior royal advisor Men Sam An said the evolution of Khmer Royal Ballet costumes reflects the country’s historical journey, cultural resilience and artistic refinement, during a performance held in Phnom Penh on Thursday.

Speaking at a cultural showcase at the Chaktomuk Conference Hall, Men Sam An said the transformation of the costumes represents not only aesthetic changes but also the continuity of Khmer civilization from past to present and into the future.

“The evolution of royal ballet attire reflects our history, prosperity, survival and the promotion of Khmer culture and civilization,” she said.

The performance highlighted how traditional costumes — inspired by Angkor-era bas-reliefs, apsara imagery and royal ceremonies — have been preserved and refined over generations, serving as a symbol of national identity and heritage.

Officials said the development of the costumes has also enhanced artistic quality and visual sophistication, with intricate embroidery, gold embellishments and handcrafted crowns contributing to the elegance of the performances.

The Royal Ballet, recognized as one of Cambodia’s most important cultural treasures, also plays a growing role in cultural diplomacy, showcasing the country’s heritage on the international stage and strengthening ties with other nations.

Authorities added that the global recognition of Khmer classical dance continues to attract tourists and support the national economy, as visitors seek to experience Cambodia’s rich artistic traditions firsthand.

Cambodia has increasingly promoted its cultural heritage as part of broader efforts to boost tourism and preserve its identity amid globalization.
