Cambodia Urges UN to Uphold Law Over Thai Border Operations
GENEVA, March 3, 2026 — Cambodia accused Thai armed forces of conducting sustained cross-border operations that have caused civilian casualties and territorial encroachments, during a statement delivered at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council on Monday.
Speaking in Geneva, Cambodia’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Dara In, said that since mid-May 2025 Thai forces had carried out operations across several border sectors, resulting in what he described as grave harm to civilian communities inside Cambodian territory.
He cited civilian casualties, destruction of homes and infrastructure, pillage, forced evictions and large-scale displacement. Barbed wire and shipping containers have continued to block access to homes and villages, he said, impeding the safe return of residents.
“Coercion cannot yield peace, nor can occupation confer legality,” the ambassador told the council, calling on member states to uphold international law and respect for sovereignty.
The statement was delivered during a general debate on the global update by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Cambodia urged the council to act with resolve and emphasized that only adherence to sovereignty, accountability and principled multilateral action can safeguard human dignity and ensure durable peace.
There was no immediate response from Thai authorities to the remarks.
