Cambodia’s CMAC uses advanced technology to clear cluster munitions
PHNOM PENH, Jan 23, 2026 — Cambodia’s Mine Action Centre (CMAC) has introduced enhanced clearance techniques using magnet-equipped machinery and reinforced operator safety systems to remove cluster munitions left from Thailand’s military operations, a senior official said on Thursday.
CMAC Director-General Heng Ratana said the new approach was developed to improve safety and efficiency in clearing unexploded cluster bombs and other remnants of war in affected provinces, as demining teams continue intensive operations in border areas impacted by past hostilities.
CMAC urged returning civilians to exercise extreme caution, warning that cluster munitions — weapons banned under international law since 2010 — remain a serious threat to life and safety. The Cluster Munitions Convention, which prohibits their use, has been ratified by 123 countries.
