China Stands Firmly with Cambodia on Defense and Regional Stability
PHNOM PENH, March 31, 2026 — China will continue to stand firmly alongside Cambodia to strengthen its national defense sector and ensure long-term peace and stability, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin said during a courtesy meeting with Cambodian National Assembly President Khuon Sudary.
The remarks were made ahead of the upcoming Khmer New Year, as both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral ties and strategic cooperation.
Khuon Sudary highlighted the long-standing friendship between Cambodia and China, emphasizing that Cambodia’s development and progress have been closely supported by sustained Chinese assistance across multiple sectors.
She also expressed appreciation for China’s constructive role in promoting peaceful solutions to the Cambodia–Thailand border situation, noting Beijing’s strategic and measured diplomatic engagement. In particular, she praised China’s initiative to facilitate a trilateral meeting held at Fuxian Lake in Yunnan province in December 2025, which helped encourage dialogue, reduce tensions and steer the situation toward stability.
The Cambodian leader further commended Ambassador Wang’s active diplomatic engagement, including his visits across Cambodia to oversee key development projects supported by China. Among them is the upcoming Kratie Mekong bridge, described as a symbol of Cambodia–China friendship and a critical infrastructure link expected to boost connectivity and improve livelihoods.
China’s continued support, she said, remains vital to Cambodia’s development, especially amid regional and global uncertainties.
Cambodian leaders also reiterated their broader vision of maintaining peace while advancing economic growth, with the goal of achieving upper-middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2050.
