Fuel Price Spike Triggers Protest in Bangkok
BANGKOK, April 4, 2026 — Labour groups and activists gathered outside Thailand’s Labour Ministry on Thursday April 2, urging the government to take urgent action to address surging fuel prices and a worsening cost-of-living crisis.
The demonstration brought together members of the Thai Labour Solidarity Committee, the State Enterprises Workers’ Relations Confederation, and the Thai Social Democratic Party.
Protesters said the sharp rise in fuel prices, linked to disruptions following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, has driven up the cost of consumer goods and placed increasing pressure on households.
In a joint statement, the groups warned that purchasing power is declining as incomes fail to keep pace with rising prices, exacerbating economic inequality.
They called on the new government to introduce immediate measures to stabilise fuel costs and provide relief to affected citizens.
Thailand, like many countries, has faced growing economic pressure from global energy market volatility, with fuel prices feeding through into transport, food and other essential goods.
The protest underscores mounting public concern over living costs, as policymakers grapple with balancing economic stability and social welfare.
