KUALA LUMPUR, March 20, 2026 — Malaysians have been urged to postpone non-essential travel to southern Thailand following fuel shortages in the region that have disrupted transport and tourism, local media reported.

Travel operators and local officials said petrol stations in parts of southern Thailand are facing supply constraints, with some outlets implementing rationing measures and temporary closures, raising concerns ahead of peak holiday travel periods.

The shortages have been linked in part to panic buying and tighter fuel supplies, prompting long queues at petrol stations and limiting mobility across affected provinces.

Tourism stakeholders warned that the situation could affect cross-border travel between Malaysia and Thailand, particularly during festive seasons, as reduced fuel availability impacts transport services and visitor confidence.

Thailand earlier moved to suspend fuel exports to safeguard domestic supply amid global energy disruptions, a decision that has contributed to tightening availability in parts of the country.

Authorities and industry players have advised travellers to monitor developments closely and defer trips until the situation stabilises, as efforts continue to manage supply and prevent further shortages.
