JAKARTA, March 8, 2026 — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said Friday that Indonesia could withdraw from the Board of Peace initiative proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump if it fails to deliver benefits for the Palestinian people.

Prabowo made the remarks amid growing scrutiny at home over Indonesia’s participation in the council, particularly following the escalation of tensions in the Middle East involving the United States, Israel and Iran, according to media reports.

The Indonesian leader has faced pressure from Muslim groups domestically after his government agreed to join the peace council and pledged to contribute thousands of peacekeeping troops to Gaza under a ceasefire framework aimed at ending a two-year conflict in the enclave.

In a statement released by the Indonesian government, Prabowo told Muslim leaders earlier this week that Indonesia joined the council with the goal of helping achieve lasting peace in Gaza.

However, he warned that Jakarta would reconsider its participation if the initiative does not benefit Palestinians or align with Indonesia’s national interests.

Prabowo attended the council’s first meeting in Washington in February and pledged to deploy up to 8,000 Indonesian peacekeeping troops to Gaza as part of a proposed international stabilization force.
