Japan Extends $163 Million Loan for Cambodia Irrigation Project
PHNOM PENH, June 22, 2026 – Cambodia and Japan have signed an exchange of notes extending a Japanese yen loan worth 24.237 billion yen (about US$162.7 million) to finance the third phase of the Southwest Phnom Penh Irrigation and Drainage Rehabilitation and Improvement Project, Cambodia’s foreign ministry said on Monday.
The agreement was signed by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the loan will support the implementation of the third phase of the irrigation and drainage rehabilitation project in the southwestern corridor of Phnom Penh.
The ministry said the project aims to improve agricultural productivity in rural areas and reduce flood damage by rehabilitating and upgrading existing irrigation and drainage infrastructure.
It said the continued financial assistance reflects Japan’s commitment to supporting Cambodia’s socio-economic development and strengthening the Cambodia-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
