Japan Voices Deep Concern Over Renewed Cambodia–Thailand Border Tensions
Tokyo, 8 December 2025 — The Government of Japan, via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has expressed serious concern over the renewed deterioration of the security situation along the border between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Kingdom of Thailand, following successive military actions by both sides, despite the Joint Declaration on border conflict signed on 26 October.
In an official statement, Press Secretary Kitamura Toshihiro stressed that the normalization and strengthening of relations between Cambodia and Thailand are indispensable to the peace, stability, and long-term development of the wider Southeast Asian region. Japan firmly opposes any actions that risk escalating tensions and destabilizing the region.
Japan has urged both Cambodia and Thailand to strictly observe the ceasefire agreement, exercise maximum restraint, and return to peaceful dialogue in the spirit of the Joint Declaration. Tokyo affirmed that military confrontation must be avoided and that diplomatic engagement remains the only acceptable path forward.
The Japanese government confirmed it is closely monitoring developments and will continue working in coordination with key international partners, including the United States and Malaysia in its capacity as ASEAN Chair, to support regional stability and promote urgent de-escalation.
