Japan Welcomes Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire, Calls for Steady Implementation and De-escalation
Tokyo, 27 December 2025 — The Government of Japan has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Kingdom of Thailand, expressing strong hope that the agreement will be implemented fully and without delay.
In a statement issued by Press Secretary Mr. Kitamura Toshihiro, Japan noted that the ceasefire was agreed on 27 December following the ASEAN Special Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, during which the defence ministers of both countries convened the General Border Committee meeting and announced an immediate halt to hostilities.
Japan expressed deep concern over the recent escalation of military clashes between Cambodia and Thailand earlier this month, which resulted in numerous casualties, including civilians, displacement of populations, and damage to civilian infrastructure in both countries. Tokyo recalled that the international community, including Japan, has consistently urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint and pursue a peaceful resolution through dialogue.
The Japanese Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting de-escalation efforts, including the effective implementation of the ceasefire, through sustained diplomatic engagement. Japan emphasized that it will continue to coordinate closely with relevant partners, including the United States and ASEAN member states, to contribute to peace, stability, and security in the region.
