VIENTIANE, April 9, 2026 — Laos is tightening safety regulations across its tourism sector following a series of incidents involving foreign visitors, as authorities seek to restore international confidence in the country as a travel destination.

Officials have ordered stricter inspections, clearer safety guidelines and enhanced monitoring of tourism operators, with a particular focus on high-risk activities such as hot air balloon rides and adventure tourism.

Authorities acknowledged that existing safety frameworks have not kept pace with the rapid growth of the tourism sector, creating gaps in oversight.

Planned measures include stricter licensing requirements, improved coordination between government agencies and tourism businesses, and the introduction of real-time alert systems. Officials also aim to provide better multilingual support for tourists in emergency situations.

The move follows several high-profile incidents that have raised concerns about safety standards.

In 2024, six foreign tourists died in Vang Vieng after suspected methanol poisoning at a backpacker hostel, an incident that drew global attention and damaged the country’s tourism image.

More recently, a hot air balloon carrying tourists collided with power lines during a sunset flight. While no injuries were reported, the incident circulated widely online and highlighted risks associated with adventure tourism.

Authorities said the new measures are aimed at strengthening oversight, improving safety standards and rebuilding trust among international visitors as Laos seeks to revive its tourism sector.
