Malaysia–Cambodia Ties on “Right Track,” Parliament Speaker Says
PHNOM PENH, 27 August 2026 — Malaysian Parliament Speaker Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Johari bin Abdul has pledged to continue promoting and strengthening bilateral cooperation with Cambodia, saying the relationship between the two countries is heading in the right direction and delivering benefits to their peoples.
Johari made the remarks during a meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace in Phnom Penh on Thursday afternoon.
During the meeting, the Malaysian Parliament Speaker praised Cambodia for its successful hosting of the 2nd Conference of Speakers of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and expressed appreciation for the progress made in Malaysia–Cambodia relations and bilateral cooperation.
He said the two countries’ relationship was developing along the right path and benefiting their peoples, while Malaysia would continue working to make bilateral cooperation more advanced and stronger.
In response, Hun Manet welcomed the positive development of Cambodia–Malaysia relations and cooperation across various sectors. He highlighted the notable growth in bilateral trade and said the two countries still had significant potential to further expand their partnership.
The two sides discussed strengthening cooperation in a range of key areas, including trade and investment, healthcare, education and vocational training, tourism, energy, technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
They also underscored the importance of cooperation and complementarity between the legislative and executive branches of government in addressing emerging challenges effectively and contributing to peace, stability and prosperity in the region.
Before concluding the meeting, Hun Manet again expressed his appreciation to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for helping facilitate the ceasefire and the Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement on 26 October 2025.
The Cambodian prime minister also briefed the Malaysian Parliament Speaker on the latest developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border, reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to resolving the border issue peacefully, in accordance with international law and existing conventions, treaties and agreements between the two countries.
