MK84 Bomb Strike Disrupts Traffic on Cambodia’s National Road 58
ODDAR MEANCHEY, Cambodia, Feb. 5, 2026 — A massive bomb crater left by an MK84 aerial bomb dropped by the Thai military has severed traffic along National Road 58 in Cambodia’s northern Oddar Meanchey province, disrupting civilian travel between border districts and nearby towns, Cambodian officials said on Wednesday.
The crater, caused by an air-dropped bomb allegedly released from a Thai F-16 fighter jet, destroyed a section of the highway linking Banteay Ampil district and Samraong town, cutting off a key transport route used daily by local residents.
Journalists from 12 media outlets, visiting the site under coordination by Cambodia’s Ministry of Information, observed extensive damage, including a crater measuring about 10 metres deep and 15 metres wide, officials said.
Cambodian authorities said the bombing occurred in Sen Monorom 1 village, rendering the road impassable and severely disrupting civilian movement in the area.
The MK84 is a high-explosive general-purpose bomb designed for hardened military targets. Cambodian officials said its use caused significant infrastructure destruction and raised concerns over the impact on civilian life.
Cambodia has repeatedly accused Thai forces of employing heavy aerial munitions, including bombs and cluster weapons, during fighting along the border late last year. Thailand has not publicly responded to the specific allegation regarding the MK84 strike.
The incident comes amid heightened tensions following clashes along the Cambodia–Thailand border between December 7 and 27, 2025, which prompted ceasefire negotiations and ongoing military talks.
