Phnom Penh, Hanoi Aim to Double Trade to $20 Billion
PHNOM PENH, April 10, 2026 — Cambodia’s acting head of state Hun Sen held talks with senior Vietnamese official Tran Cam Tu on Friday, reaffirming strong bilateral ties and pledging to deepen cooperation across key sectors including trade, border security and defense.
During the meeting at the Senate Palace, Hun Sen welcomed the visit by Tran Cam Tu, a member of the Politburo and standing member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam, describing it as a reflection of the “strong and trusting relationship” between the two neighboring countries.
Both sides highlighted the growing cooperation between Cambodia and Vietnam, particularly in border management, where authorities from both countries have worked closely to combat cross-border crime and maintain stability.
Officials said trade between the two countries has surpassed $10 billion, with both sides expressing ambitions to raise the figure to $20 billion in the coming years.
Tran Cam Tu noted that cooperation has expanded across multiple sectors, including defense and border affairs, and emphasized joint efforts to prevent hostile forces from using either country’s territory against the other.
Hun Sen agreed on the importance of strengthening coordination between border authorities to ensure peace, stability and development along shared frontiers. He also called for accelerating ongoing border demarcation work, describing it as essential to long-term stability.
The Cambodian leader underlined that economic cooperation, trade and investment remain central pillars of bilateral relations, while also stressing the importance of strengthening ties between state institutions, legislative bodies and ruling parties.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the long-standing friendship between Cambodia and Vietnam and enhancing cooperation at both bilateral and regional levels.
