Phnom Penh Urges Activation of JBC with Thailand
PHNOM PENH, March 27, 2026 — Cambodia has reiterated its commitment to resolving border issues with Thailand through peaceful means and international law, calling for the full activation of bilateral mechanisms to ensure lasting stability.
In a statement issued on March 25, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said recent positions expressed by Thailand’s Joint Information Center align with Cambodia’s long-standing approach of peaceful dispute resolution.
Phnom Penh reaffirmed that the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) remains the primary technical body responsible for demarcating the Cambodia–Thailand border, stressing the importance of resuming survey and demarcation work.
The ministry said Cambodia stands ready to immediately continue JBC activities based on existing legal frameworks, including the Franco-Siamese treaties of 1904 and 1907 and related mapping agreements.
Cambodia also highlighted the role of the ASEAN Observer Team in building trust and verifying compliance with agreements, while calling for strengthened communication to prevent misinformation.
As a neighbouring ASEAN member state, Cambodia said it is prepared to resume discussions through established mechanisms, including the General Border Committee (GBC) and Regional Border Committee (RBC), urging a shift from diplomatic statements to concrete implementation.
Officials said activating these frameworks is key to maintaining long-term peace, stability and shared prosperity along the border.
