BANGKOK, April 15, 2026 — Air pollution levels have surged across Thailand, with hazardous concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) recorded in 42 provinces, authorities said on Wednesday.

The Air Pollution Resolution Communication Centre warned that air quality could worsen further over the coming week, raising concerns about public health and daily life.

In northern provinces including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Nan, PM2.5 levels ranged between 54 and 201 microgrammes per cubic metre — far exceeding recommended safety thresholds. Similar conditions were reported across parts of the northeast, with readings reaching as high as 190 microgrammes.

Central regions, including areas near Bangkok, also recorded elevated levels, while the capital and surrounding zones reported moderate to unhealthy air quality.

PM2.5 particles — tiny enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream — are linked to a range of health problems, including respiratory illness, heart disease and premature death.

Authorities said pollution levels remain widespread across the north, northeast and central regions, with dozens of provinces affected.

Environmental experts have warned that worsening air quality could disrupt daily activities and increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

Officials said monitoring would continue closely, with advisories expected as conditions evolve.
