JAKARTA, March 1, 2026 — Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said he is ready to travel to Tehran to help mediate dialogue between the United States and Iran, as tensions in the Middle East escalate following the collapse of recent negotiations, the foreign ministry said on Sunday.

In a statement on social media, Jakarta urged all parties to exercise restraint and prioritize diplomacy to restore a “conducive security condition.” If both Washington and Tehran agree, Prabowo is prepared to depart for Iran to facilitate talks aimed at reducing hostilities and re-establishing dialogue, the ministry said.

The offer comes amid a surge in conflict after U.S. and Israeli military strikes against Iranian targets, which have heightened fears of a broader regional escalation. Indonesia expressed deep regret over the breakdown of peace negotiations and stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty and resolving differences peacefully, according to the statement.

Iran’s embassy in Jakarta welcomed Indonesia’s mediation offer on Sunday, saying Tehran “welcomes the readiness of the President of the Republic of Indonesia to mediate” if both sides consent, and called on Indonesian officials to condemn what it described as aggression by the United States and Israel.

The mediation proposal has drawn some domestic criticism, with former Indonesian officials questioning the feasibility and political risks of such a mission absent agreement from both conflicting parties.

Indonesia also urged its citizens in affected areas to remain calm and heed local authorities amid the heightened tensions.
