Rare Horned Lizard Found in Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary
PHNOM PENH, 16 July 2026 — A rare Mountain Horned Dragon, locally known as Banguoy Banla Phnom or Banguoy Snaeng, has been spotted in Cambodia’s Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary in Pursat province, highlighting the area’s rich biodiversity.
The reptile was recently discovered by park rangers from the Pursat Provincial Department of Environment together with a group of hikers exploring the scenic Phnom Tompor area within Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary. The mountain stands at an elevation of 1,551 metres and is located in Pramaoy commune, Veal Veng district.
According to the hikers, the reptile was an unusual sight, as the species is rarely encountered compared with other wildlife found in the sanctuary.
The Mountain Horned Dragon, scientifically known as Acanthosaura, is recognised for its distinctive horn-like spines protruding from its head and a row of sharp spines running along its back. Its brown, earth-toned coloration provides excellent camouflage among tree branches, fallen logs and forest vegetation.
The species typically inhabits dense mountain forests with cool temperatures and high humidity. It is harmless to humans and feeds primarily on insects and other small invertebrates.
Environmental officials said the sighting underscores the ecological importance of Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary, one of Cambodia’s key protected areas, and reflects the country’s rich natural heritage and biodiversity.
