PHNOM PENH, Jan 19, 2026 — Thailand has installed a new statue at a disputed border site inside Cambodia, placing it atop the remains of a Vishnu statue earlier demolished by Thai troops, reigniting regional concern over cultural heritage and territorial sensitivities, Cambodian and international sources said on Monday.

The development took place at the An Ses border crossing in Preah Vihear Province, roughly 400 metres inside Cambodian territory, according to Cambodian officials. The original Hindu deity statue became a flashpoint this month after its demolition triggered criticism from Cambodia and drew expressions of deep concern from India, which urged dialogue and protection of cultural heritage.

Cambodian observers said the installation of a new statue on the Cambodian-built structure was seen locally as an attempt to assert control over the site, further straining ties following earlier protests over the demolition.

The incident comes amid heightened border sensitivity, even as both nations publicly reiterate commitments to de-escalation through dialogue and established bilateral mechanisms.
