Techo international airport is Cambodia’s new gateway to the world
According to an official post on the Facebook page of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate, on the morning of September 9, 2025, the “Techo International Airport”—a major new achievement and source of national pride for Cambodia—has officially commenced operations. The airport will be formally inaugurated on October 20, 2025, under the high presidency of Prime Minister Hun Manet.
The opening of Techo International Airport marks a significant milestone for Cambodia’s aviation and economic sectors. The new airport assumes the role of Cambodia’s primary air hub, replacing the existing Phnom Penh International Airport.
The first flight to land at the new airport was operated by national carrier Air Cambodia, bringing tourists from China, while Korean Air was the last airline to depart from Phnom Penh International Airport.
Constructed on a vast site covering approximately 2,600 hectares, the airport spans parts of Kandal Stung district in Kandal province and Bati district in Takeo province. Strategically located about 20 kilometers south of Phnom Penh’s city center, the new airport has been classified as a 4F-rated facility, the highest international standard in the aviation sector.
With this classification, Techo International Airport is capable of accommodating all types of aircraft, including large models such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747.
In its first phase of operations, the airport has the capacity to handle up to 13 million passengers annually and process 26,000 tons of cargo.
Aviation is among the most vital modes of transport, linking tourism, business, diplomacy, and multi-purpose missions, while serving as a major driver of the economy. It plays a central role in attracting investment, strengthening connectivity, and expanding international relations.
For this reason, Cambodia has invested actively in building a world-class international airport, ensuring it can meet the growing demands of air travel and connectivity while positioning the Kingdom as an increasingly important destination in the region.
