TRAT, March 31, 2026 — A Thai military commander has been abruptly removed from his post following a tense border confrontation involving Cambodian officials and international observers, in an incident that has drawn attention to what Cambodian sources describe as provocative and disrespectful conduct.

The Royal Thai Marine Corps confirmed that Navy Captain Thammanoon Wanna, commander of a marine task force in Trat province, was among 17 officers relieved of duty and reassigned following the March 26 incident near the Thmorda border area.

According to reports, the confrontation occurred during a visit by Thai personnel to a container post along the border, where Cambodian Lieutenant General Kum Kosal and accompanying officials, including members of the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), were present to monitor ceasefire compliance.

Cambodian sources said Thai personnel displayed provocative behavior, including the placement of Thai national and naval flags in disputed areas, as well as raised voices and confrontational gestures toward Cambodian diplomats and observers.

The incident was further escalated when a Thai officer reportedly engaged in a verbal exchange with Cambodian officials, drawing criticism for what has been described as a lack of diplomatic respect and professionalism during a sensitive international monitoring mission.

No official explanation has been provided by Thai authorities regarding the exact reason for the reassignment, but the border confrontation is widely seen as a key factor.

Cambodian officials reiterated that the presence of the ASEAN Observer Team is intended to ensure transparency, build trust and support the implementation of ceasefire agreements, and stressed that all parties must adhere to principles of mutual respect and international norms.

The episode highlights ongoing tensions along the Cambodia–Thailand border, despite existing agreements aimed at maintaining peace and stability.
