Thai Military to Investigate Alleged Beating Before Soldier’s Death
BANGKOK, Feb. 26, 2026 — Thailand’s army said it will investigate the death of a conscript who died while in detention at a military prison in November, following allegations of abuse and questions raised by his family.
Private Phetcharat Kamlangying died on Nov. 11, 2025, after losing consciousness while being held at the 12th Military Circle prison, according to former People’s Party lawmaker Nitchanan Wangkahat. He was later pronounced dead at Fort Chakrapongse Hospital.
Nitchanan cited testimony from another detained conscript who alleged that Phetcharat had been beaten following a dispute with another detainee appointed as barracks leader.
The soldier’s family has expressed doubts about the official explanation that he died of heart failure. A relative said Phetcharat had no known history of heart disease. They also questioned the circumstances of his death after a mortician reportedly found a metal spoon among his cremated remains.
The army has not publicly detailed the cause of death but said an investigation would be conducted.
Phetcharat is among at least 26 Thai conscripts who have died under suspicious circumstances over the past 17 years, according to rights advocates. Several cases have involved allegations of beatings as disciplinary measures, while others were attributed to sudden illnesses such as heatstroke or heart failure. Some deaths were ruled suicides.
Human rights groups have repeatedly called for greater oversight and reform of Thailand’s military conscription system.
