Thai Monk Denies Sexual Relationship as Controversial Audio Circulates Online
BURIRAM, October 20, 2026 — A 49-year-old abbot in Thailand’s northeastern province of Buriram has denied allegations that he was romantically involved with three women simultaneously, admitting only to exchanging flirtatious messages with one woman on Facebook.
Phra Khru Sophon Chitraphirom, abbot of Wat Prasat Thong in Ban Kruat district, made the statement during a nearly two-hour inquiry at the district office on October 19, attended by provincial Buddhist officials, senior monks, local administrators and community leaders.
The inquiry followed the circulation of an audio recording in which a woman was heard angrily confronting the abbot inside his quarters over alleged jealousy and claims that he had been involved with multiple women. The recording also contained allegations of property damage.

Abbot Admits to Flirtatious Messages
During the inquiry, the abbot acknowledged exchanging flirtatious messages with the woman on Facebook but denied having a sexual relationship with her.
He also rejected reports that he had been romantically involved with three women at the same time, insisting that he had interacted romantically with only one woman.
Speaking through tears, he maintained that the online conversations did not constitute an offence requiring him to leave the monkhood under Buddhist monastic discipline.
However, he announced that he had decided to disrobe on October 26, which marks the end of Buddhist Lent this year.
Decision Intended to Ease Public Concerns
The abbot said his decision to leave the monkhood was intended to ease concerns among his followers and local Buddhists and prevent further damage to the reputation of the clergy.
The controversy has drawn attention to questions of conduct and accountability within the local monastic community following the circulation of the audio recording.
The allegations, including claims of property damage and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, remain subject to investigation by the relevant monastic authorities and government agencies.
The abbot’s planned departure from the monkhood is scheduled for October 26, while the authorities continue examining the case.
