BANGKOK, April 13, 2026 — Thailand has reported an increase in voluntary enlistment in its 2026 military conscription, with nearly half of recruits opting to join the armed forces without being drafted, officials said.

A total of 27,698 men volunteered for service, accounting for about 44% of those selected for active duty this year. Overall, 62,318 personnel were required to meet military needs, down by 5,504 from the previous year.

According to official figures, 434,778 young men reported for the annual conscription process, which ran from April 1 to April 12.

The majority of volunteers joined the army, with 20,031 recruits, while 3,871 enlisted in the navy and 3,796 in the air force.

Military officials said the drafting process was conducted smoothly and in line with nationwide standards, emphasizing transparency and fairness as key factors supporting public confidence.

The increase in voluntary enlistment, up by 1,508 compared with last year, may reflect improving perceptions of military service and conditions, analysts said.

Thailand maintains a system of mandatory conscription for eligible males, though authorities have increasingly sought to encourage voluntary participation as part of efforts to modernise recruitment.

Officials said the lower number of required conscripts this year could indicate improved efficiency in force management, with future policies expected to further promote voluntary enlistment.
