Tourist Balloon Hits Power Lines in Laos, Causing Blackout
VANG VIENG, March 26, 2026 — A hot air balloon carrying tourists struck power lines during a sunset flight in Laos’ popular tourist town of Vang Vieng, triggering a widespread power outage but causing no reported injuries, authorities said.
The incident occurred as the balloon was descending when it collided with high-voltage cables, according to local reports and video footage circulated online. The impact caused electricity disruptions affecting thousands of homes and businesses in the area.
Witnesses described a tense scene as the balloon became entangled in the cables, tilting mid-air while passengers screamed and the operator attempted to regain control.
No injuries were reported, but authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
The accident comes just weeks after Lao authorities temporarily suspended paramotor and hot air balloon operations in Vang Vieng from late February to mid-March following earlier safety concerns.
It remains unclear whether the latest incident will lead to renewed restrictions on aerial tourism activities in the area, a major attraction for both domestic and international visitors.
