BANGKOK, April 1, 2026 — Thailand is moving forward with plans to introduce a 300 baht (about $9) entry fee for foreign tourists arriving by air, as part of efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and visitor protection systems.

Officials said the proposed fee, expected to take effect in 2026 pending cabinet approval, will apply only to international air arrivals, while travelers entering via land borders will remain exempt.

The measure, long under discussion, is being revived as Thailand seeks to strengthen its tourism sector and improve services for millions of visitors.

Authorities said revenue from the fee will be used to fund basic travel insurance for tourists, including coverage for accidents and emergencies, as well as upgrades to airports, public facilities and the management of high-traffic tourist destinations.

The exemption for land arrivals is aimed at avoiding additional costs for cross-border workers and travelers from neighboring countries, many of whom rely on frequent border crossings.

The plan had previously been delayed over concerns it could affect tourism recovery, but officials now say conditions are more favorable for implementation.
